New Rules For Pa. Dog Kennels Take Effect This Summer
HARRISBURG (CBS) - Regulations governing commercial dog kennels in Pennsylvania are now final and are set to take effect this summer.
The regulations were formulated in accordance with the dog law signed by Governor Rendell two years ago. Spokeswoman for the state Department of Agriculture, Nicole Bucher says, "After the dog law was passed, we spoke to stakeholders -- including veterinarians, commercial kennel owners, animal advocacy groups and rescue organizations – and worked together to further define the protections in the dog law."
The regulations, which take effect July 1st, improve standards for ventilation, humidity, lighting and flooring in commercial kennels.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department this week convened the first statewide meeting of dozens of stakeholders to address funding and other problems facing animal shelters. Bucher says it was just the beginning of the discussion on that issue.
