New Report Shows Local Beaches In Good Standing When It Comes To Water Quality
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An independent annual report on water quality along popular beaches from coast to coast puts most of those around here in pretty good standing.
The Natural Resources Defense Council based in Washington looked at federally mandated water quality inspections and found pollution levels off New Jersey at among the lowest in the country, at just two percent. Delaware was at three percent. In fact, beaches in Dewey and Rehoboth have earned what the group calls "superstar" status because they're that clean.
South Jersey beaches rate three stars out of five for the most part, but polluted storm water runoff is still a problem nationwide, according to David Beckman, the director of the group's Water Program.
"The best way to keep most of the pollution out of our beach water is to prevent it from the start by investing in smarter, green infrastructure on land."
