New Programs Help Jobseekers Get Skills, Connections To Land A Job
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia's unemployed now have four new ways to get the skills and connections they need.
The four programs are being offered through PA Careerlink offices in the city. Nicki Woods, site manager of the 10th and Spring Garden office, says there's an online job-search and resume-builder, a certificate program proving that its graduates have marketable skills, paid on-the-job training where firms get to craft the skill-set they need, while wages are subsidized for up to six months.
"This is a great initiative in that it matches interested employers with job-seekers that they can train. It will provide them with the right talent because the job-seeker will be trained to that employer's specifications."
And there's a big push with computers, called the Microsoft IT Academy. "We're very excited about the partnership that we have with Knowledge Solutions International, Inc. The academy is going to provide 350 Microsoft courses and the latest versions of Microsoft applications most commonly used in the workplace."
Woods says these initiatives offer valuable help on both sides of the job-seeker, job-provider equation.
Call the PA CareerLink Philadelphia hotline at 215-557-2625 for more information on any of the four services.
