New Program Aims To Train Educators Into Principals
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A coalition of public, charter and Catholic schools is launching a program to train prospective principals.
It's a new pipeline for educators who want to become principals.
It's called The Philadelphia Pathway to Leadership in Urban Schools, or Philly PLUS.
Five educators have been selected so far, and as many as 10 more may be chosen by September, to gain on-the-job training in inner-city education.
It's a project of the Great Schools Compact which is a collaboration of public, charter and parochial schools.
"Once they've successfully completed the program, and ideally are able to land a job as a principal for the following school year, there will be ongoing coaching for those folks in their first year on the job," says Mark Gleason, executive director of the Philadelphia School Partnership.
Plans call for 30 aspiring principals to be trained next year and 50 the year after that.
The program is funded by the Partnership and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
