New Policy In NJ To Restrict The Use Of Steroids By Police
NEW JERSEY (CBS) -- New rules in place in New Jersey will restrict the use of steroids by law enforcement officers.
The policy change, approved this week by Attorney General Paula Dow, followed reports out of Hudson County that a doctor, now deceased, was prescribing large amounts of steroids to cops—drugs paid for out of the state's prescription plan.
"We thought that his level of prescriptions were certainly far outside the national average or even the statewide average, and it gave grave areas of concern we couldn't ignore," Dow says.
The state will now closely monitor how steroids and human growth hormone drugs are doled out by doctors. Cops can also be tested, and if they come up positive, they will have to produce a doctor's note stating the medical need and that the officer is considered fit for duty. The changes take effect in the fall.
