New Penn State Prez Plays It Safe At Press Club Appearance

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) --- Penn State's new president sidestepped most of the controversial issues surrounding his school during an appearance at the Pennsylvania Press Club yesterday.
With regard to lifting or easing sanctions against Penn State stemming from the Jerry Sandusky scandal, new President Eric Barron will only say that his "general view in life" is that if you're doing well, you should be rewarded.
"So if we're sitting there with what I think is the best compliance in sports ethics program in the nation, Penn State should be rewarded for that," he said. "But I won't go farther than that."
Barron says he won't call for reducing sanctions, because he doesn't want to tell people what to think about the issue.
Likewise, Barron said during his Press Club appearance that he welcomes the conversation on a proposal by one of Penn State's trustees to revisit the school's internal investigation of the Sandusky scandal conducted by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, but he says the discussion must remain civil.
