New Park-on-a-Pier Coming For South Philly's Pennsport Neighborhood

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Plans for another new park along the Delaware River were unveiled today.
The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation unveiled plans for its third new park along the riverfront, this one called "Pier 68."
DRWC president Tom Corcoran explains that Pier 68 South is located adjacent to the Walmart-Home Depot-Superfresh shopping complex in South Philadelphia, where the parking lot meets the river.
Corcoran says he is not surprised when someone tells him, "I had no idea this place even existed."
"Yes, many people haven't," he says, "and when it's fully completed it's going to really catch people's attention."
Corcoran says there's a lot of work to be done before the new park opens in the Pennsport neighborhood.
"Well, first, the pier structure itself needs to be reinforced. It's in generally good condition, but we need to repair it so that it's here for the next fifty years. And then all the concrete you see here will be gone and it'll be replaced by a grove of trees. Out in the middle of the pier, there's going to be a wetlands park."
The pier is expected to be open for visitors by the summer of 2015.
