New Lights To Debut On Schuylkill River Bridges In Philadelphia
By Mark Abrams
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia will celebrate the re-lighting of four bridges along the Schuylkill River Thursday night.
Joseph Syrnick, president and CEO of the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, worked with city and state officials to press the project forward.
He says four main spans over the Schuylkill -- Market Street, Walnut Street, JFK Boulevard and a SEPTA railroad bridge -- will be lit during ceremonies set along the Schuylkill Banks trail at 8 p.m. between the Market Street and Chestnut Street bridges.
"This is really a refurbishing of the architectural or decorative bridge lights along the center city bridges over the Schuykill River that were originally done back for the millennium back in December of 1999."
Syrnick says because PennDOT is planning reconstruction work on the Chestnut Street bridge within the next two years, the group decided to wait on re-lighting that span until the work is done.
He says the new lighting scheme relies on LED-style lights, which are more reliable and less costly to maintain.
