New Jobs Report Puts Gloucester County Among Worst In Nation For Unemployment
GLOUCESTER COUNTY (CBS) - A new federal jobs report puts Gloucester County among the worst areas in the nation for unemployment but a South Jersey official says read between the lines.
Gloucester County's job losses between March of 2009 and 2010 are enough to land it among the Bureau of Labor Statistics' top ten for percentage declines in employment among large counties:
"No one was surprised to see us on that list. Two big employers puts a dent in your numbers."
County freeholder director Steve Sweeney says Sunoco's shuttering of its refinery in West Deptford and the U.S. Postal Service packing up its facility in Logan killed around 1,000 jobs.
But thanks to the now-under-construction Port of Paulsboro, he says that won't be the story for long:
"We expect 2,000 to 2,500 permanent jobs. We expect to open it within a year-and-a-half, and we think that we're going to be in very good shape with a lot of people working there in good-paying jobs."
