New Jersey's Governor Vetoes Senate Unemployment Bill
by KYW's David Madden
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie issued a conditional veto on a senate bill that overhauls the state's unemployment compensation law. What does that mean to you if you're unemployed?
The answer is nothing. Payments will not be affected by the changes sought in the bill. In fact, the entire idea behind the bill was to reform the rules to cut costs; thereby lowering the rate of increase businesses would pay into the unemployment compensation fund.
Mike Drewniak is the governor's press secretary:
"People who lose their employment because of bad behavior they are not essentially rewarded with that by being eligible just like everyone else would be."
They'd also have to work longer at a subsequent job before being eligible for an unemployment check again.
Christie indicates the bill doesn't go far enough and there are signs the senate might be amenable to incorporating many of the changes the governor seeks.
