New Jersey Unions Planning Rally For Wisconsin Workers
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Union leaders in New Jersey are planning a solidarity rally for public workers in Wisconsin.
New Jersey's AFL-CIO is organizing Friday's rally outside the Statehouse in Trenton. It represents 1 million workers. The union will be joined by other labor organizations, including AFL-CIO leaders from Wisconsin.
Workers there are protesting Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to strip collective bargaining rights to help balance the state budget.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he supports Walker for taking strong measures to balance the budget. But Christie stopped short of endorsing Walker's proposal to limit collective bargaining only to wages.
Christie, a first-term Republican, is pushing the Democratic Legislature to enact pension and health care changes that would make public workers delay retirement and pay more for benefits.
