New Jersey Looks At Raising Judges' Retirement Age
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey judges would be allowed to work longer under a measure advanced by lawmakers.
The state Assembly Judiciary Committee on Monday advanced a constitutional amendment that would ask voters to increase the judicial retirement age to 75. Judges now must step down when they turn 70.
If lawmakers approve the measure, it would require voter approval to take effect.
The committee also approved hiking the retirement age for county prosecutors and administrative law judges to 75. It's also considering a separate measure that would let retired judges be recalled for service until they turn 85.
Advocates say the measures would reduce the backlog of court cases caused in part by judges' retirements.
