New Jersey Lawmaker: Motorists Being Cheated By Red Light Cameras
TINTON FALLS, N.J. (AP) -- A New Jersey lawmaker says motorists are being cheated by red light cameras and he says he has the data to prove it.
Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon says the cameras are designed to increase revenue for towns and don't promote safety as intended.
At a news conference Monday, O'Scanlon presented online videos that showed several intersections where yellow lights were shorter than required under the camera program's guidelines. He says two-tenths of a second difference in the yellow light can increase violations by 30 percent.
Last June, state officials suspended the program for a month after determining that 63 of the cameras were not tested to ensure the yellow lights were timed properly.
The state announced in April that it had suspended plans to add more cameras before next December.
