New Jersey Grants Final Permits For Offshore Wind Farm
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- The company planning to build what could be the nation's first offshore wind farm has received the final New Jersey state permits needed for the project.
Fishermen's Energy of Cape May now only needs approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the wind farm it wants to build about 2.5 miles off Atlantic City. And that could come sometime this coming week
The company plans to erect six wind turbines that would produce up to 25 megawatts, capable of powering about 10,000 homes.
It recently received a state permit to dig under the beach and Boardwalk in Atlantic City to lay electric transmission cables. And it also finished a mandated year of avian and marine mammal monitoring
Construction should start sometime in the summer of 2012.
