New Jersey Going After Atlantic City Expressway Toll Cheats
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There's an effort underway to crackdown on chronic toll cheats along the Atlantic City Expressway.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority is first going after owners of vehicles with New Jersey plates -- individuals or businesses that owe more than $200 in unpaid tolls.
Violators could have their registration suspended if they don't pay what they own within 25 days.
"It takes a long time to build up to $200 on our roadway cause if you travel from Philly to Atlantic City for example, it's $3.75," SJTA spokesman Kevin Rehmann said. "That's a lot of trips."
Rehmann says there are legal hoops to jump through before action can be taken on other state's plates.
A list of vehicles with New Jersey tags are being sent to the state's motor vehicle commission Wednesday.
A similar crackdown effort took place in March for toll violators along the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike owning more than $1,000.
