New Jersey Forest Firefighter Struck, Killed
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS/AP) — Officials in western New Jersey say a firefighter with the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service has been struck and killed by a vehicle while on duty.
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns says 35-year-old Jeffrey Scheurer, of Raritan Township, was working with other department members on a controlled burn along Route 629 near the Round Valley Reservoir in Clinton Township when he was struck by a vehicle.
Investigators believe a heavy smoke condition from the controlled burn may have reduced visibility in the area.
Officials have not said if the vehicle remained at the scene. They say the investigation is continuing.
Scheurer was also a member of the Readington Volunteer Fire Company.
