New DRPA Bridge Signs Leave Some Drivers Smiling, Others Wondering

By Mike DeNardo

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) --  There are new signs going up this on the four bridges operated by the Delaware River Port Authority.  Officials  say they're signs of appreciation.

The new westbound sign mid-span on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge simply says, "Thank You," with the DRPA logo below.

But it's not someone thanking the DRPA.  Spokesman Tim Ireland says it's the DRPA thanking the 264,000 drivers who use its bridges each day -- and not just for paying the toll.

"We have a lot of causes for gratitude when it comes to our customers," Ireland tells KYW Newsradio. "One of them is, our customers tend to observe the speed limit. They tend to be courteous to one another, they tend to be attentive to safety issues.  We have a lot to thank them for, and that would be an awfully large sign.  That would be a lot of metal."

Ireland says the signs -- on the Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Walt Whitman, and Commodore Barry bridges -- are permanent.  He says they were made in the DRPA's sign shop for a few hundred dollars.
