New Census Bureau Interactive Map Shows How Young Adults Have Changed Over Generations

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new age group is getting special attention from the Census Bureau. Eighteen to 34-year-olds are the subject of the bureau's new "explorer" tool.
KYW's Pat Loeb says it's turned up some interesting facts about Philadelphia's young adults.
Millennials, so-named because they were born roughly in the last two decades before the millennium, have become an object of fascination since they surpassed baby boomers as the largest age group in the United States. So the census bureau focused on them when it developed its new tool.
"A new interactive map that lets you compare how generations of young adults have changed over time," says demographer Jonathan Vespa.
Vespa says when you zero in on Philadelphia you see that millennials here are doing better than their parents did at their age.
"Young adults in Philadelphia are more likely to have a college degree and they're more likely to earn more too, about $5,000 more per year."
Vespa says they're also more likely to be non-white or immigrants, in keeping with national trends, and less likely to be married.
