New Castle County Principal Arrested Following Theft Investigation

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) - A New Castle County elementary school principal was arrested Sunday after he allegedly stole thousands of dollars from the school, according to authorities.

New Castle Police say 43-year-old Jacob Getty, Jr. of Wilmington stole over $18,000 from the Parent Teacher Association and fundraising events at Harry O. Eisenberg Elementary School.

In early October, administrators in the Colonial School District contacted state police after they suspected that the school's principal had misappropriated funds from several book fairs held at the school beginning in 2009.

During the investigation, authorities learned that since April 2009, Getty, who had control of the Eisenberg Elementary PTA check book, had written 11 pre-signed checks to himself, totaling $4,000.

According to police, Getty then used the money reportedly stolen from PTA funds not only for himself, but to pay a bill owed to a fundraising company from a 2009 book fair.

Further investigation revealed that Getty also kept the money raised during a fundraising event held at the school in September of 2010 and two others in May of 2011.

The Delaware State Police obtained warrants on Getty for the above list of crimes.

Getty was arraigned at JP Court 11 and released on $12,000.00 unsecured bail.
