New Castle County Burglary Suspect Calls 911 On Self

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) - This wasn't the most difficult crime the New Castle County police ever had to solve.

The burglar wound up calling 911 on himself and he solved two separate crimes in the process. From inside the home he broke into, police say John Finch called 911 in an apparent intoxicated stupor.

New castle county police believe the 44-year-old had been inside the home for a couple of days.

"He had consumed three bottles of gin and two bottles of Whiskey," said New Castle County Police Officer John Weglarz.

When police arrived, they found Finch locked inside the home on Woodsdale Road. He couldn't get out of the rear window he broke into, and the house has the kind of deadbolt locks you need a key to open up from the inside.

"He hid in the closet once the homeowner came to check on the house," Weglarz said.

It turns out Finch was already a wanted man for a crime at a familiar location.

"Finch was wanted for burglary and theft from a burglary that happened back in April at the same residence. We just couldn't find him because he happened to be homeless until he called 911 asking for help," Weglarz said.

The elderly homeowner never came in direct contact with Finch who police say stole some of her jewelry the first time he broke in.

Finch is locked up now on two felony counts of theft and other charges.
