New AMMP Exhibit Features Quilts By Haitian Women
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A collection of quilts created by women in Haiti are on display at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
The new exhibit in gallery three of the African American Museum showcases 22 original art quilts as well as the collaborations that let to their creation.
In 2006, Peace Quilts, the non-profit humanitarian organization, travelled to Haiti to encourage the women there to use their talents for embroidery for quilt making.
Ramona Riscoe Benson is president and CEO of the African American Museum and says the quilting project allows the Haitian women to express themselves creatively and to help with household expense, "The quilting idea is a newer way for them to express part of their creative aspects of who they are and to generate income to support their families."
