New Affordable Housing Development Dedicated in Pennsauken, NJ

By Pat Loeb

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Developers and public officials cut the ribbon today on 75 units of a new, affordable housing along the Delaware River, in Pennsauken.

As new developments go, Riverfront Village checks all the boxes: energy efficient, near mass transit, affordable rent, with units set aside for formerly homeless veterans and low income families.

And Camden County freeholder Michelle Gentek (center of photo below, wearing red jacket) predicts it will do even more.

"Revitalizing this site with housing is a catalyst for further transformation and development," she said.  "When you fix up a blighted area, the rest will come."

The townhouses replace a blighted lot that had been vacant for 20 years.

For Katyria Rayes, it's a new beginning.  The affordable rent allowed her to move with her toddler out of her parents' house.

"I love it!  It's a lot of space. It's a nice community.  It's really quiet," she said.  "We have a water view, so... it's great."
