Never Too Late To Think Summer Vacation
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Now that we are all getting back to work, it is time to start thinking about summer vacation. A travel expert gives her view of what is hot and what is cheap.
They are very often not the same thing, admits Jeanenne Tornatore, Senior Editor for Orbitz.
This year's top destinations could be London, with the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics. Austin, Texas, which has added a Formula 1 Grand Prix event to its stable of attractions. Maybe even Chicago, with two major international conferences.
She says the best deals may be in San Diego, Washington DC, and Mexico's Riviera Maya, with smartphones and tablets being the new way to shop.
"In the past where we saw a lot of people really using the apps from the travel companies to check their flight status, now we're seeing people booking more and more via these applications in mobile devices," Tornatore said.
Including day-off hotel bookings. Tornatore says there is a huge trend in "flash sales" for getaways.
"What's interesting about these flash sales, because they offer such great last-minute deals. Fifty percent off hotels for the coming weekend many times (for example). We think travelers are really going to be looking and signing up for these in the coming year to get those last-minute deals," she said.
