Neshaminy Schoolteachers Press For New Contract By Tightening Work Rules
LEVITTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - Teachers in the Neshaminy School District rallied today outside their union office in Levittown, outlining a new plan as they work to get a contract.
This coming school year could be the fourth year that teachers in the Neshaminy School District have started school without a contract. Health care remains the sticking point.
Neshaminy Federation of Teachers' president Louise Boyd says the NFT is planning a new "work to contract" action for the start of the school year, effectively refusing to perform duties outside of those mandated in their expiring contract.
"When school starts for teachers on August 29th," Boyd says, "we will follow the following procedures: teachers will report to work each day 15 minutes before the bell; we will meet at the flag pole each morning and walk inside to school together. We will leave school 15 minutes after the final bell. Teachers will prioritize work for each given day. We will not take work home from school (although) teachers will participate in student orientations and scheduled back-to-school nights."
What does she think the likelihood of a strike is?
"We have had several meetings with our membership and we have been authorized to take a strike when needed," she told KYW Newsradio today.
The school board says it is willing to negotiate. A negotiation session with the school district is scheduled for tomorrow night.
