Neighbors Rescue Toddler, 3 Others During Kingsessing House Fire
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A toddler was among four people who were rescued by neighbors during a house fire in Philadelphia early Thursday morning.
The fire started at about 2:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of S. Alden Street in the city's Kingsessing section.
The fast moving one-alarm fire trapped four residents on the balcony on the second floor of the building.
"I smelled smoke coming through the ceiling. So I heard somebody hollering and I went outside and there was flames coming through next door," neighbor Laisha Sargent explained.
Sargent, along with her uncle David Rose, quickly sprung into action to save their neighbors.
Sargent and Rose used a mattress that was in a trash pile to catch a two-year-old and his parents.
Rose said Sargent caught the baby and then his parents jumped from the balcony to safety.
All three and another family member were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. The fire marshal is investigating to determine a cause.
