Neighbors React To Luring Attempt In South Jersey
MOORESTOWN, NJ (CBS) -- Most people in Moorestown, NJ don't think twice about walking around downtown.
"People are great around here," smiled Jeff Mehler. "It's a great area."
"I'm passing by here all the time," he said, nodding toward Main Street. "It's pretty safe and quiet."
But Mehler was not here Saturday night when police said a man, driving down West Main Street, approached a 16-year-old boy walking around the area and asked him to get in the car, offering him a ride home.
Police said the teenager asked for identification. Police said the suspect drove into the TD Bank parking lot, turned around, and then sped off down West Main Street.
"It's alarming that something like that could happen around here," said Mehler after hearing of the incident.
"Does it surprise me?" Ken Wehn asked rhetorically. "Not really. We live in a crazy world."
Police described the suspect as a white male. They said he is in his 40s and has close-cut, light hair. They said he was driving a dark-colored, four-door compact car.
"It's a good town, but anybody can roll through this town, just like any other town," Wehn noted.
Wehn said, no matter how nice an area is, parents always have to watch out for their kids, and teach their kids to watch out for themselves.
"On the streets, you have to be careful. On the Internet you have to be careful. There's a lot of stuff going on right now and the parents have to stay on top of it."
Police said the suspect car was last seen in Moorestown heading down West Main Street toward Maple Shade.
