Neighbors Hold Vigil For Elderly Rape Victim In Kingsessing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The home invasion, rape, and robbery of an 81-year-old woman has shaken a southwest Philadelphia neighborhood. Neighbors rallied last night to support the victim.
Local residents have voiced concern about the incident and a rash of crime in their drug infested area.
The incident that sparked concerns of residents occurred last Monday. According to the police departments' special victims unit, an unidentified man broke into a south 51st street home and brutally attacked and raped an 81-year-old woman who was asleep in her bedroom.
The incident didn't stop there.
Police say the man stayed inside the victims home for some two hours ransacking it, leaving things broken and in disarray then fled with $25.
The victim was treated at a local medical facility.
At the vigil, neighbors called for an end to a seemingly endless wave of crime that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years throughout Kingsessing and southwest Philadelphia neighborhoods.
