NCAA Removes Basketball Tournament Games, Other Competitions, Out Of NC Due To Transgender Law
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On Monday night, the NCAA announced that they will be removing all of their championships scheduled to take place in North Carolina in the 2016-17 athletic seasons.
The move is being made in reaction to law in the state which NCAA says may not promote an inclusive environment for its athletes and other members of the NCAA.
Seven championships were set to be played in North Carolina, including first and second round games in the Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament. No new location has been named for any of these games.
The NCAA cited that North Carolina law does not protect against the discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individuals. The NCAA also reference North Carolina law prohibiting the use of a restroom based on a person's gender identity.
Earlier this year, the NBA decided to remove the 2017 NBA All-Star game from Charlotte to New Orleans due to the same reasons.
