NBA Confirms Trade Sending Iguodala To Warriors
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The three-team trade that will send swingman Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors, guard Randy Foye to the Denver Nuggets and a trio of expiring contracts along with a package of draft picks to the Utah Jazz is complete.
The trade announced Wednesday started when the Warriors reached a free agent agreement with Iguodala on a four-year, $48 million deal last week. Golden State cleared more than $24 million by sending Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Jazz along with four draft picks and cash.
In the end, the teams wrapped the transactions into one trade that provides additional salary cap flexibility and compensation for each of them.
The Jazz received Golden State's first-round picks in 2014 and 2017 and second-round picks in 2016 and 2017. Utah also acquired Denver's second-round pick in 2018.
Golden State is only taking back Kevin Murphy and his non-guaranteed $788,000 deal from Utah. The Warriors will be able to roll part of the salaries of Jefferson ($11 million), Biedrins ($9 million) and Rush ($4 million) into trade exceptions, which allow teams to exceed the salary cap under the NBA's complicated system.
All three are in the final year of their deals.
After losing Iguodala as a free agent, the Nuggets finally consented to a sign-and-trade deal to give Golden State that flexibility only when they could get something back. By signing Iguodala first and then sending him to the Warriors, Denver will get a trade exception — likely worth about $9 million — that it can use any time within the next year.
Denver also received Foye in a sign-and-trade with the Jazz, who got back that additional pick while they continue to purge players and build for the future. Foye and the trade exception should somewhat ease Denver's loss created by Iguodala's departure.
But it's still a loss.
Iguodala averaged 13 points, 5.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds while playing forward and guard last season for the Nuggets, who lost in six games to the Warriors in the opening round of the playoffs. He spent his first eight years in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers and has averaged 15.1 points on 46 percent shooting for his career.
The Warriors will introduce Iguodala at a news conference Thursday at the team's downtown Oakland headquarters.
