Nation Of Islam Leader Minister Louis Farrakhan Marks 16th Anniversary Of Million Man March
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's been 16 years since the Million Man March started. To mark the anniversary of the event, thousands gathered at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Sunday for a day of atonement and empowerment for the black community.
On October 16, 1995, hundreds of thousands of black men, led by Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan, marched on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. That event was supposed to symbolize the black community's decision to stand up against crime and immorality, and take back their neighborhoods. Sixteen years later, 78-year-old Farrakhan told the black community they have a lot of work to do.
"The future of our people depends on our ability to mobilize for action," he said during his speech.
"What can pass on to your children? That dilapidated house that you live in? That car that you drive and the notes that you still paying? What will we leave for our children if we don't leave them a nation and a land upon which to build a future for ourselves and our people!"
The minister spoke against the wars in Afghanistan and against America's treatment of the poor and middle class, referencing the need for the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Organizers say more than 10,000 attended the day's event.
