'Mummies' Exhibit Opens Saturday At Philadelphia's Franklin Institute

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The highly anticipated "Mummies of the World" exhibit opens Saturday at the Franklin Institute, on Logan Circle.

Forty mummies -- some of royalty, some unknown, including families, children, even pets --- make up the exhibit, the largest collection of mummies ever assembled.

James Delay, director of development for American Exhibition International, the show's producer, says the idea is to make visitors aware that the mummification process did not start in ancient Egypt.  The exhibiton starts there, he says, but then moves to South America.

"...where we have a huge and amazing collection of naturally preserved mummies with gorgeous hair.  And each of them has their own unique story which we've drawn out through the science," he says.

Mummies of the World
opens Saturday and will last through October 23rd, the only east coast showing of the exhibit.
