Mt. Airy's Enon Eagles Headed To Pop-Warner Super Bowl
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The 11 and 1 Enon Eagles football team, is filled with phenomenal players. 12-year-old Christopher Burwell says he is more than a straight "A" student.
"I never got a "B" in my life," said Christopher Burwell. "I get A pluses."
13-year-old D'Andre Swift lives up to his name. He can run 100 meters in 12 seconds; the 8th fastest time in the nation, according to his coach, for someone his age.
"Not many people can catch me, so it's pretty cool," said Swift.
14-year-old Troy Johnson has heart and determination. Three years ago his mother died from liver cancer.
"She's my motivation to play," said Johnson. "Whenever I'm about to play the game, I feel like an extra sense of power right inside me. I always think it's my mother.
For the first time, this weekend these Eagles are flying to Disney World. They'll compete in the 135 pound division, Pop Warner Super bowl. Pop Warner is the oldest and largest youth football program in the world.
"This is like a once in lifetime opportunity," said coach Ray Wright. Wright has been coaching the Enon Eagles since they were formed in 2005. The team is an extension of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Mt. Airy.
On Tuesday, there is no practice, that time is set aside for bible study.
"It keeps them centered and grounded and one thing we say all year is stay hungry and humble," said Wright.
"It gets us motivated because we know we have God on our side," commented Swift.
It's that advantage, they say, that helped them defeat the Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers at Regional's last week.
With just five seconds on the clock, they stopped their opponent at the 1 yard line, winning 22 to 16.
No matter what happens in Florida the coaches and families are proud of what the team has already accomplished.
"They're still champions. They're still champions, not just in my eyes but in the eyes of the Lord as well," said Wright.
