Motorcyclist Clinging To Life After Fall From Route 1 Ramp

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A motorcyclist is clinging to life after an early morning accident on Route 1.
The accident happened right where I-76 west splits, the right lanes become Route 1, the Roosevelt Expressway over the twin bridges.
The motorcycle was going onto Route 1, when he somehow lost control, possibly going too fast.
Philadelphia Police Lt. Frank McMonhele says the motorcycle went one way, the rider went the other, over the edge of the bridge down about 40 feet into a ravine below.
And with no other way to reach him, rescuers had to slowly lower themselves down with ropes.
"They did an outstanding job, they were able to slowly get down to him, stabilize him, put him on a stretcher and bring him back up."
That took nearly half an hour. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition with several serious internal and leg injuries. This all happened around 2:45 Friday morning, the ramp was closed for about three hours.
