Mother, Son Shot In North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Crime scene tape surrounds a shooting scene at the Richard Allen Homes complex on Parrish street near tenth in North Philadelphia Sunday evening where police say five 40 caliber shell casings have been recovered.
Police say it appears a woman and her teenage son were caught in the crossfire when other people on the street and someone in a maroon sedan started firing at each other.
"All I know is I heard gun shots," said Rhonda Gary who lives on Parrish Street.
The victims were rushed to Hahnemann University hospital. As they waited for updates, family members identified them as 38-year-old Kia Rogers who police say was shot in the leg and 15-year-old Dykeem Rogers, who police say was shot in the back.
"She's fine," said Darren Rogers said of his wife.
Rogers said his son was going to be okay too. He said he was not at the scene when the shooting occurred.
"It's not fair for hard working people to have to put up with this," Gary said.
On Parrish Street, her family was celebrating her son's graduation from Lincoln University when she says the gunshots shattered the fun of the family get-together. She says her son had just pulled up in his green car.
"They shot his tires, they almost shot my son," she said.
The back window of a van was shattered after it was struck by a bullet. One witness says three people were in the maroon car that took off after the shooting. Police are questioning other witnesses and say the victims say they didn't know the gunmen.
We asked Darren Rogers what he would say to whoever did this.
"Come forward," Rogers said.
