Mother Gunned Down In Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- On the corner of Davis Street, friends and family will remember the life of Dawn Dollard, 42, who was killed Wednesday night. It is the city of Wilmington that will remember her death.

"This city has a problem with violence," said Councilman Kevin Kelley.

Dollard was in her home when police say two masked robbers forced their way in. Dollard tried to escape out the back door with her son, 17, who was home with her. Police said the suspects shot her son in the left shoulder and shot her in the back. Her death breaks a record in Wilmington: most homicides in one year.

"It's unfortunate that we're standing here talking about it," said Councilman Steve Martelli.

This is the city's 29th homicide of the year, including two vehicular homicides. That breaks the mark from 2008. Police say nearly half, 14 cases, are still open.

The homicide that tied the record happened just one day earlier.

With a month still to go in the year, council members said more homicides are certainly possible, especially after the city laid off six police officers.

Dawn Dollard worked for the city's parking authority. Her friends said she cared for everyone around here. But now the woman who shunned violence has become its latest victim.

Dollard's son is in stable condition. Police have not released suspect information yet. If you have any information, you are asked to call the police.
