More Traffic Cams for Pa.'s Highways
Penndot says it will soon have complete camera coverage of I-95 in Pennsylvania.
KYW's Paul Kurtz reports the traffic agency has been gradually installing the traffic cams over the years and it now looks like the entire highway will be wired by early next year.
Penndot's Charles Metzger says all those extra eyes will allow a more rapid response when trouble arises:
"We can figure out what the real on-the-ground conditions are and then we can work through our maintenance crews to go out and help if it's bad weather. If there's an emergency, we can have emergency responders respond."
In addition to cameras, Penndot has been installing variable message signs displaying real-time information to motorists and ramp meters for drivers attempting to make their way onto major highways.
It's all part of Penndot's Intelligent Transportation System that will eventually cover I-95, the Schuylkill Expressway, 676, 202, and 422.
