More Snow For Some: 4-6" Of Snow Expected For Parts Of Our Area

The sights of snow and the chill of Winter just won't go away this January. The Eyewitness Weather Team is once again tracking a major Southern Winter Storm that will bring snow to parts of our area overnight. A Winter Storm Warning in is effect for Sussex County in Delaware and Cape May County in New Jersey for 4-6" of snow. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for interior southern New Jersey and Kent County in Delaware for 2-4" of snow. In the city of Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs a coating to 2" may accumulate. It has been such a snowy month in Philadelphia (24.9" so far) that we are only .4" away from the topping the 3rd snowiest January on record.
An area of low pressure is strengthening off the Carolina Coast this evening. Snow, Sleet and Freezing rain have caused chaos from Texas to Virginia. Six southern states have already declared states of emergency and power outages are adding up by the hundreds. This rare southern Winter Storm is also snarling traffic and causing thousands of flight delays and cancellations. 6-12" of snow my fall in parts of North Carolina and all this mess is advancing North and East. We do not expect amounts to that extreme but snow is expected to overspread Southern New Jersey & Delaware by 10pm tonight. Snow will be heaviest overnight and will taper by sunrise Wednesday. Since temperatures have been so cold, the snow will stick instantly on most surfaces. Untreated roads and walkways may be slippery Wednesday morning so give yourself extra time heading out the door especially if you are traveling Southeast.
The only good news about all this is that the Arctic air will retreat behind the storm and more seasonable temperatures will return. By the weekend the mercury will climb into the 40s.
