Philadelphia street renamed for fallen Temple Police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A street renaming ceremony was held Thursday for fallen Temple University Police Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald.
"This is a great statement, not only for Temple University, but for his family, city, state and country to know that we all recognize and appreciate his hard work," Temple University police officer, Leroy Wimberly said.
The 1700 block of Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia will be renamed "Christopher Fitzgerald Way."
Sergeant Fitzgerald was killed in the line of duty back in February while responding to a robbery.
Fitzgerald's wife, four children and Governor Josh Shapiro attended the ceremony.
CBS News Philadelphia was there in May, when the officer's widow, Marissa Fitzgerald, held the new street sign.
"Now when people walk down this block, they will see Chris's name. They will see a name of a hero, someone who was the best of us," Gov. Shapiro said.
Wimberly spearheaded the effort to make the sign a reality.
"Myself and my partner got out and pounded the pavement and got over a thousand signatures in a week nonstop," Wimberly said.
The sign, Wimberly said, was put there to serve as a symbol of Fitzgerald's sacrifice.
"Christopher Fitzgerald gave his life for what he believed in, but yet he's remembered," Wimberly added.
