Montco Tree Farm Again Spearheading Christmas Tree Donations to US Military Families
By Cherri Gregg
LANSDALE, Pa. (CBS) -- A Christmas tree farm in Montgomery County, Pa. is gearing up to sell thousands of trees this holiday. But they are also planning to give away additional trees to deserving families.
When you drive up to Bustard's Christmas Trees, on Bustard Road, there are candy canes, a 15-foot-high inflated snowman, and hundreds upon hundreds of trees.
"We have Frazier fir, Douglas fir, Concolor fir, Nordman fir..." enumerates Jay Bustard, who grew up growing and chopping down trees. His family has been in the Christmas tree and wreath business for 85 years.
"It's fun," he says.
The farm sells more than 7,000 trees every December, and over the past ten years they've given away thousands of more through a program called "Trees for Troops," which gives free Christmas trees to military families.
"We personally donate trees," notes Bustard, "and customers, if they want and they can, donate trees at a discounted price."
This weekend the Bustards will be baling and loading trees that will go to a military base in Georgia.
Customers seem to enjoy joining in the spirit of giving.
"It gets you in the mood, it definitely does," said one today.
