Montco Drop-off Box Ensures Respectful Disposal For Old American Flags
By Brad Segall
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A collection box is now housed in the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, giving residents a way to make sure their American flags are properly disposed of.
The handcrafted, wooden, red-white-and-blue box stands outside the sheriff's office. When it's time to retire your flag, officials say, bring it to the courthouse and deposit the flag in the box.
County employee Stan Sarnocinski Jr. of the Patriotic Order Sons of America, based in Leesport (Berks County), Pa., says those worn and frayed flags will then be given a proper goodbye.
"The Boy Scouts will properly retire your flag for you the proper way," Sarnockinski (second from left in photo) tells KYW Newsradio. "The Boy Scouts will cut each stripe, cut the stars, and they are burned in a proper fashion."
He says it's time to begin thinking about retiring your flag when it starts to lose its color. The Patriotic Order Sons of America is the organization responsible for passing legislation more than sixty years ago creating the Flag Day holiday.
