Monsignor Lynn Tells Grand Jury Abuse Case Slipped Through The Cracks
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The jury in the clergy abuse case has now heard more testimony by defendant Monsignor William Lynn, who testified before a grand jury in 2002. This evidence does not go to the specific charges against Monsignor Lynn in this case, but rather an alleged pattern of conduct by Lynn and other church officials.
Monsignor William Lynn was questioned before the grand jury about his handing of alleged abuse cases. In one case, an alleged victim accused a priest of rape and provided the names of other possible victims. Monsignor Lynn testified it was policy not to seek out possible victims because it might re-victimize them.
The priest denied any abuse, no other action was taken, and the priest remained pastor at a parish for three more years before another alleged victim came forward. Monsignor Lynn concedes this case fell through the cracks.
Monsignor Lynn has pleaded not guilty. The defense contends he tried to address the problem but final priest placements were made by the Archbishop.
