WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. (CBS) -- A police department in South Jersey is urging residents to be on alert for a phone scam that involves individuals posing as IRS agents demanding money.
On a post on its Facebook page, the Monroe Township Police Department (Gloucester County) is warning residents about the circulating scam.
According to investigators, several Monroe Township residents have reported that they have received phone calls from individuals identifying themselves as IRS Agents/Officers.
The individuals are telling the residents various reasons why they must immediately pay money to the IRS to avoid warrants, liens and other prosecution. They request the money be sent via money transfer sites, such as Western Union.
Monroe Township police officials want residents to know that this is a scam and they should not send money.
Authorities say if residents have an outstanding obligation to the IRS, they should contact the IRS directly.
If you are contacted by someone who identifies themselves as an IRS agent or officer, you are advised to hang up and go to the IRS website to report the scam.
