BELLMAWR, N.J., (CBS) -- Today is the busiest mailing day of the year.
The United States Postal Service expects to pick up over 34 million packages globally.
The United States Postal Service processing and distribution center in Bellmawr handles the mail for all of South Jersey.
At more than 250,000 square feet, it is one of the largest facilities in the area and at no time is it busier than this week.
With the help of her three-year-old daughter, mom Jill Melchiorre mailed some 40 Christmas cards today.
"All of my cousins are married with different houses and I still have to go to my aunt and uncle's. It keeps getting bigger and bigger," she said.
At the UPS distribution center in South Philadelphia, roughly 28,000 packages will be handled today.
"From using our ground system, you want to put our packages in the system today or tomorrow. As you get closer to Christmas, the time shrinks a little bit," Tom Farrell of UPS said.
Vincent Lopez bought his gift from Amazon on Friday and picked it up today.
"Playstation 4. It's what everyone has been looking for this Christmas so I'm happy to get it," Lopez said.
For package delivery via the Postal Service now, it's recommended customers pay extra to make sure delivery is made before Christmas.
"At this point, send their packages priority, that way they'll get the two to three day service, definitely will be there before Christmas," Postmaster Sam Saldana said.
And if you still have yet to mail out those Christmas cards, don't worry, you do have more time. According to the Postal Service, as long as you send them out by Friday via regular mail they should be delivered in time.
