Mobile Devices Causing Digital Eye Strain
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Many of us have become so addicted to our mobile devices that there are psychological terms to describe it. Terms such as "digital addiction" and "nomophobia" - the fear of being without your mobile device - are being used more and more commonly.
There can be health effects as well and, according to the Vision Council, the impact can be on your eyes.
The council found nearly 95 percent of Americans spend two or more hours each day on digital devices, which puts them at risk for digital eye strain. Thirty percent spend more than half their waking hours using a digital device and this is believed to be contributing to the 61% of adults who admit to experiencing digital eye strain.
Digital eye strain is a condition that includes symptoms like dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches and neck and back pain.
