Mitch Williams Says He Would Consider Phillies TV Job
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Two of the former players who have had their names mentioned as possible replacements for Chris Wheeler and Sarge Matthews on the Phillies TV broadcasts have a lot of similarities, but one very key difference.
Brad Lidge and Mitch Williams were both successful closers for the Philadelphia Phillies. Both are beloved in the city, and both threw final pitches in World Series games for the team. The big difference is that the pitch Williams threw landed in the outfield seats, courtesy of Joe Carter, and the pitch Lidge threw ended in Carlos Ruiz's glove, and a parade down Broad Street.
Lidge told Comcast Sportsnet, "thanks but no thanks." Williams however, isn't ruling it out.
Williams, an analyst for the MLB Network, said he'd consider the job, though he likes the job he has now.
Williams was a guest of Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Friday, and Cataldi asked Williams about his interest in the position.
"I have a pretty good gig right now Ange [Angelo Cataldi]. It's not something that I would not listen to, it's definitely something I would be interested in, but it would have to be something that would be very significant to get my to leave what I'm doing now," Williams said. The job that I'm in now I love, and I know I would love doing Phillie games and being part of the Phillies on a day-to-day basis covering them. So we'll just have to see what happens, you know how all that goes, but I love the fact that people in Philly are kind of rooting that I get that job."
"First off, let me say T-Mac [Tom McCarthy] is one of the best play-by-play guys there is in the business right now," he said. "Number one, he's got a great voice. Number two, I had a great rapport with him, and I've done FOX games now for four years. I do them every year. I've been doing national talk color for the last four years, so it's not something I'm not used to doing. I enjoy doing it.
Former Phillies closer Ricky Bottalico, and local product and former MLB catcher Ben Davis have both had their names come up in fan discussions about the vacant position. Both are currently employed by Comcast Sportsnet as part of their Phillies coverage.
