Millions Travel To Celebrate Thanksgiving With Family
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and sloppy weather could make a stressful day even less pleasant.
Airports across the country are bracing for an estimated 23 million travelers today and with this bad weather it'll be even more of a challenge.
This is an "everybody into the pool" event for airports, says Greg Principato, President of Airports Council International-North America. From staff to volunteers, there's a lot to do when moving a crowd that amounts to 2/3 the population of Canada.
Principato urges passengers be prepared.
"You want to show up with your boarding pass. If can can check in on-line before you leave, that's always best. Go to the TSA website and know what TSA is going to let you take through their check-point. Go to your airline website and make sure you understand what their baggage policies are."
Both in terms of what constitutes a carry-on and any baggage charges.
Principato says not to travel with wrapped gifts. They'll only be unwrapped by security, causing irritation and delay.
Of course, roads will also have much higher than normal volume. More than 42 million people are expected to hit the road today.
Kelly Drive is closed between Fountain Green Drive and Strawberry Mansion because of heavy flooding.
On SEPTA's Media-Elwyn Line; Outbound service to Elwyn is suspended. Inbound service to Center City has delays of up to an hour. All due to downed overhead wires.
