First And Second Ladies To Visit Penn In Support Of Military Families
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The first and second ladies plan to visit Philadelphia, next week. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden have scheduled an announcement at the University of Pennsylvania for Wednesday afternoon.
The visit is part of a two-day, four-city celebration of "Joining Forces." That's the effort to serve military families that has been a special focus for Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden.
Penn nursing school dean, Dr. Afaf Meleis, says they'll announce that Penn is one of 450 nursing schools across the country to commit to special training in post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other health concerns specific to veterans and their families.
"We are very, very excited that they are giving attention to this area and we are really pleased of the recognition of how important nurses are in dealing with this problem."
Meleis, says it's a sensible approach, since nurses are on the front lines of care, "because of the number of people who are coming back from two major wars and because of the different warfare that was used this time, we just need involvement of larger communities and larger groups of health care professionals."
