Merion Station Mother Restless As Son Tries To Escape Japan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Main Line woman whose son is in Japan on a post-college teaching assignment is struggling to bring her son home. The good news is her son is alive, but trying to bring him home to the US is a significant challenge.
Debbie Golden, from Merion Station, knows she is more fortunate than most. Her son, Alex, a Haverford School and Colgate University graduate, has managed to post messages on Facebook and send her a text since the quake.

Still, Golden spends her days at her father's California home, on the phone with Japanese contacts, trying to get her son out. She tried the US State Department but, she said, "Well, they haven't been very helpful. What they say is that they have no authority to act in Japan unless they are invited to do so by the Japanese Government."
Alex told her he has food, water and is in a warm place, but, she said, "The thing that I'm most nervous about now is the nuclear reactors. He's pretty close to the northern-most."
All Golden can do is hope that news accounts of State Department officials on the ground trying to locate Americans on the ground is true. In the meantime, all of the major roads around Alex are destroyed and the one remaining road is for emergency vehicles only.
