Merchants Expect PSU Merchandise Sales To Plummet

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In the aftermath of the Penn State scandal, there are reports that merchants are expecting sales of Nittany Lions merchandise to plummet. A New Jersey sports marketer sees that as likely.

The sky is still blue and white, but there may not be as much green to be had from selling Penn State jerseys, hoodies and whatever.

"I think, at least in the short-term, sales of their merchandise will take a hit, yes."

That's Tim McGhee of MSP Sports Marketing and a board member of the National Sports Marketing Network who says Penn State diehards may buy more stuff, but not enough to make up for those who are just creeped out by the whole thing.

"When you look at some of the other big scandals, if you will, USC losing scholarships because of players taking improper benefits or signing with agents, those are things, they're certainly not unprecedented, what you saw at Penn State defies any sort of historical precedent."

And McGhee warns, this story is not done, criminally or civilly.
