Mercer County, NJ Gets Piece Of World Trade Center For 9/11 Memorial
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (CBS) - Mercer County, NJ is joining the list of places where the September 11th terrorist attacks will be remembered with a piece of the former World Trade Center.
Mercer County acquired a length of girder and plans to put it in a county park in time for the tenth anniversary of 9/11.
County executive Brian Hughes (at lectern) says 30 Mercer County residents died in the attacks, and many more traveled to New York that fateful day from three NJ Transit rail stations, so the memorial will be as personal as the tragedy.
"Now we will be able to remember it a little bit more viscerally in Mercer County, with a memorial that we will be able to feel, we will be able to walk up and touch," Hughes said.
Hughes ceremonially removed an American flag that was covering the eight-foot beam as it lay surrounded by county first-responders, some of whom had gone to New York to help in the sad days after the attacks.
